THE AMAZING TRANSPLANT
DVD region 2. Odeon Entertainment.

Doris Wishman made her name as the Queen of the Nudies in the early Sixties with films like Blaze Starr Goes Nudist and Nude on the Moon to her credit. Later she would make 'roughies' (Bad Girls Go to Hell), weird exploitation (Deadly Weapons) and the infamous sex change documentary Let Me Die A Woman. In the 1970's, she made porn titles like Come With Me My Love (aka The Haunted Pussy), but before that she occupied a short-lived middle ground between X and XXX movies. Like producer harry Novak, she would shoot films which were as explicit as the could be without taking that final step into hardcore. The Amazing Transplant is a good example of her work at the time.
Hailed as 'the first penis transplant movie' (though Percy appeared in the UK around the same time), the film is classic exploitation- a convoluted plot involves a man having his dead friend's penis transplanted, only to discover that his buddy was a crazed sex killer. Naturally, the new penis takes over his mind whenever he sees women wearing tacky gold earrings and he is forced to rape and kill them.
With Wishman's typical directorial style (rarely showing characters faces when they spoke saved her money in recording sync-sound!), the film is pretty funny for a while, though less-hardened viewers may find it all a bit much after a while. The transplanted penis doesn't look to be anything to shout about (and naturally stays flaccid through the 'torrid' sex scenes), but the music is astonishing and the garish look of the film quite endearing.
DVD extras include astonishing trailers for Wishman's Deadly Weapons, Double Agent 73, The Immoral Three and the amazingly sleazy Love Toy; a wonderful vintage sex hygiene short and another pointless Miss Weird clip.
Sadly, it's impossible to wholeheartedly recommend The Amazing Transplant, through no fault of the distributor. Britain's idiotic censors have chosen to cull over twelve minutes of 'sexual violence'and 'inappropriate dialogue' from the film and the extras. Cretins.
