FLESH TRADE
(Headpress)

Bruce Barnard’s new book on the British sex industry is a thoroughly entertaining new tome, taking in the mainstream porn world, the scuzzy end of the market which no-one ever discusses and the anti-sex campaigners with a fresh, honest writing style that makes it a pleasure to read.
Broken up into short chapters, the book invites you to pick it up for short burst reading, but is fascinating enough to draw you in and make you go through the entire thing in one go.
If you wanted to know what went on at bukkake parties or Porn Addiction programmes, look no further – Barnard has been there for you. He also tries his hand at gay sex chat lines, allows Mediawatch head John Beyer to make a fool of himself and talks to porn pirates – something which upset sex shop owners when the chapter was extracted in trade mag ETO, the legit retailers failing to realise that it is their own excessive prices which drive punters to the bootleggers.
Barnard is refreshingly non-judgemental and honest about his interest in sex – there are many references to his masturbatory habits here – and the result is a book which not only lifts the lid on British sexual entertainment but proceeds to stick its head into the toilet bowl.
Excellent.
